30: Dominik Želinský and his Czechoslovakia

In 2023, Slovakia is celebrating its 30 years of existence. On this occasion we are speaking to young Slovaks born in 1993, the so-called peers of the republic.

Reflecting on the Czech and Slovak ties 30 years after the Velvet divorce is 30 year old sociologist, writer and literary analyst Dominik Želinský. Being born in 1993, yet still somehow impersonating Czechoslovakia, in some of his works he looks on the stereotypes of Slovak characters in Czech movies.

In the interview with Dominik Želinský you will find out:

  • how the idea of Czechoslovakia is perceived by millennials
  • whether there still exist a shared Czechoslovak identity in culture
  • how the uneven power dynamics between the Czech Republic and Slovakia throughout the shared history impacted stereotypical depiction of Slovaks in today’s mainstream Czech film production
  • whether Slovaks feel offended by stereotypical depictions that Želinský likens to the concept of "the noble savage"
