Diversity in the workplace

Diversity in the workplace
One of the longest-running studies of human happiness has confirmed that we need to feel positive emotions about work. After 85 years of study, Harvard researchers found that the people who felt unhappy tended to have jobs that required minimal interaction with other people and did not create the conditions for building meaningful relationships with colleagues. Anyone can experience feelings of sadness or loneliness at work, but we can also face discrimination and lack of acceptance at the office. Slovakia's largest online job board, profesia.sk, has conducted a survey on people's attitudes towards diversity in the workplace. Experts studied how people with various differences are seen and accepted in Slovakia. The researchers worked with the Centre for Research on Ethnicity and Culture and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. They also compared the results within Central and Eastern European countries, Finland and some Western European countries. Anna Podlesná, CSR manager of profesia.sk, presents the detailed results of the survey in an interview. The researchers focused on the following population groups:

1)    parents with children under the age of ten
2)    people over the age of 55
3)    national minorities and ethnic groups
4)    foreigners
5)    people with disabilities
6)    the LGBTI+ community

The following questions are discussed in the story:

  • Do employers support diversity in the workplace? Does diversity have an impact on the quality of the work itself?
  • Which groups are least accepted in the office and how does this affect their mental health and work performance?
  • Up to a third of respondents feel humiliated at work. What makes them feel discriminated against and who discriminates most?
  • What jobs are currently in demand and how has the war in Ukraine affected the job market in Slovakia?
