City tours based on Holocaust survivor testimonies

City tours based on Holocaust survivor testimonies

The Second World War was the largest and cruellest armed conflict in human history, costing the lives of up to 60 million people, both soldiers and civilians. Entire cities were destroyed and incalculable damage was done to human and cultural heritage during the six years it lasted. In Slovakia there are more than 2,800 memorials or plaques placed in memory of those who fell in the Second World War.

Millions of people lost their lives during the Second World War. It is estimated that a total of 50 to 55 million civilians died, of whom 6 million were Jews. The Milan Šimečka Foundation, whose aim is to initiate and support activities that promote the development of democracy and humanity, also deals with education in the field of the Second World War. Their IWalks project is a series of interactive city tours that bring the history of the Holocaust to life through the audio-visual testimony of survivors. Michal Keim, project manager at the Milan Šimečka Foundation, explains why and how this project came about in an interview.

  • How did the authors collect the stories for this project and when did this initiative begin?
  • Where can you see and hear the testimonies of Holocaust survivors?
  • Is the Slovak education system properly set up? Can teachers effectively inform young people about our history?
  • Is there a connection between the events of the Second World War and the present?
