Freedom fighters in memories and on memorials

Freedom fighters in memories and on memorials

There are several Czechoslovak war memorials that can be found on the British Isles. Be it at the military cemetery in Brookwood, in Leamington Spa, at Cholmondeley Castle, or near Arisaig in the western Highlands of Scotland. Zuzana Botiková spoke to the descendants of the Czechoslovak veterans, who look after a veteran section at the Brookwood Military Cemetery, near London.

One of the last Czechoslovak veterans buried at the plot bought by the Czechoslovak legionaries at Brookwood Military Cemetery was General Ivan Otto Schwarz, who passed away in January 2018. Gerry Manolas, chair of the Memorial Association for the Free Czechoslovak Veterans still remembers him well.

Nonetheless, the Memorial Association is not active only in and around Brookwood. Its international secretary, Marta Majerčík, is based in Slovakia.
