On the occasion of 80 years since the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, national public radio channel Rádio Devín premiered a unique audio document giving voice to yet unheard makers of Slovak history. Series entitled “Neznáme príbehy Slovenského národného povstania” or “The unknown stories of the Slovak National Uprising” was produced by documentarist Ivica Ruttkayova in cooperation with significant Slovak historians as well as Slovak Radio Archive. The collaboration resulted in a 4 part cycle full of novel information about Jewish resistance fighters, a Romani member of the US Office of Strategic Services, “Flora” brigade as well as activities of significant Bratislava physician.
In this interview, Ivica Ruttkayová is shedding the light on the topics she picked for presenting in her document. The talk about unique recordings is illustrated with audio clips from the documents, e.g. daughters of Jewish resistance fighters, the grandson of Karel Koch, archive recordings of interviews with Květa Viestová and Anton Facuna.
