Look who is looking

The opposition OLaNO party has filed a motion with the Interior Ministry's police inspection. They want the inspectorate to examine not only the police database screening of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak some six months before his murder in February last year, but also the personal connections of the responsible police officers, the degree of their possible coordination, and suspected links between the owners of the private security company Bonul and former police chief Tibor Gašpar, on which Kuciak reported extensively. Last Thursday the daily Dennik N reported on Kuciak's screening in the police database, stating that Pavol Vorobjov, director of the intelligence unit of the Financial Police at the Police Corps Presidium, carried it out on the orders of then-Police President Tibor Gašpar. In such cases, the police are looking for basic information such as address, family relations, or gun ownership. Vorobjov told the daily he would not comment on the issue, while Gašpar denied the report. Forced to resign last year after street protests following Kuciak's murder, Tibor Gašpar is currently an advisor to Interior Minister Denisa Saková.

Interior Minister Denisa Saková wants to discuss the alleged screening of Kuciak with the Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini before making public statements on the matter, according to her spokesman Petar Lazarov - who did not say, however, when this discussion would take place. He added that after careful consideration of all the circumstances and facts surrounding the matter, Saková will take a position on the alleged screening of the murdered journalist and make her decisions on the matter public.
