30 years of Slovakia in the United Nations

“Over the three decades during which it has been a member of the United Nations, Slovakia has built up a reputation as a reliable partner that professes the legacy of the UN Charter”, said acting Foreign Affairs Minister Rastislav Kacer on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Slovakia's accession to the UN. Kacer noted that the door to the UN was open for Slovakia from the beginning, as evidenced by the short period of time between the country's establishment and its accession to the organisation. "The international community showed us, then a young country, that it was counting on us in the UN system, thereby giving us the necessary self-confidence," he said.

According to Rastislav Kacer, Slovakia took on its role and began to participate actively in the international order, which is based on rules. "The world has had to adapt itself to historical developments over the past 30 years, but it appears that an arrangement based on cooperation and dialogue between countries is the only one that has the potential to survive," stated the minister. At the same time, he praised the UN's role in addressing the war in Ukraine, help for refugees, along with its initiative in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Slovakia joined the UN 30 years ago, on January 19, 1993, thereby becoming its 180th member country.

Slovakia's active participation in the UN is also evidenced by its regular membership in the main organs of the organisation - the Security Council (2006-2007), the Human Rights Council (2008-2011 and 2018-2020), the Economic and Social Council (2010-2012) and Miroslav Lajcak's chairmanship of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. From the co-author of the UN Charter, Jan Papanek, to the present day, Slovak diplomats have remained active and visible throughout the United Nations system.
