Slovak and British officials mark 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations

The United Kingdom and Slovakia are currently facing common security challenges, and relations between the two countries are thus very important, Leo Docherty, a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Europe said during a debate held at the University Library in Bratislava on Tuesday (January 24) to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishing of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Slovakia.
To cope with the challenge posed by the unlawful Russian invasion of Ukraine, Britain and Slovakia must continue to cooperate within the framework of NATO, stressed Docherty. According to him, cooperation should continue to cover other areas as well, such as trade, education and culture.
Docherty pointed to the fact that Britain had links with people from Slovakia during World War II, when Slovak pilots served in the British Royal Air Force.
British Ambassador to Slovakia Nigel Baker said that Britain's relations with Slovakia are extraordinarily deep, whether they are relations between politicians, ordinary people or the business ties that the two countries have built up over the past 30 years. He noted that some 140,000 Slovaks are currently living in Britain and that both countries closely cooperate within NATO. The challenge for the coming years is to deepen mutual relations even more, he added.
The event was also attended by interim Foreign Affairs Minister Rastislav Kacer, who praised relations between the two countries and highlighted bilateral cooperation in various areas. (TASR)
