Slovakia signs deal to cut electricity prices

Slovakia has signed a contract with Slovenske elektrarne - Slovak Power Plants (SE) to supply electricity to households at 61.20 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh). This was announced on Tuesday by Prime Minister Ludovit Odor together with Economy Minister Peter Dovhun and Slovenske elektrarne CEO Branislav Strycek. According to Odor, electricity prices are therefore not expected to change significantly next year.

The next government will have to decide on support for businesses. The Prime Minister emphasized that the fall in world electricity prices shows that there is no need for massive subsidisation of the price of electricity. The Slovak Power Plants general director praised the state for its commitment not to introduce any taxes, regulations or charges outside of the EU standard in the period of 2023-25. After launching the fourth nuclear block of the Mochovce power plant the Slovak company will become a great power player in electricity generation. According to its CEO Branislav Strycek, Slovakia will have the highest share of nuclear energy in overall electricity consumption in the world. The Slovak Power Plants and its stockholders arrived at a deal with the government of Eduard Heger to supply electricity to Slovak households at more advantageous prices already back in 2022. An addendum to the memorandum on electricity supplies extends this until 2027.
