On Saturday, 30 September, Slovaks went to the polls to elect their 150
representatives in the Narodna rada, or National Council.
The victor of saturdays election was Robert Fico’s SMER-SD who gained 22.94% of the vote. Progesivne slovensko, PS led by Michal Simecka finished in second place with 17.96%.
They were followed by Peter Pellegrini’s Hlas-SD with 14.70. The winner of 2020’s election Igor Matovic’s OLANO, who this time were led by Erika Jurinova finished fourth with 8.89%. As they were a coalition, with Kristian uniion and Za ludi they needed to pass 7% to gain entry to parliament.
Other parties who passed the 5% threshold to make it into parliament were KDH, the Christian Democratic Movement led by Milan Majersky with 6.82%, Sasku, or SaS led by Richad Sulik gained 6.32% followed by Andrej Danko’s SNS, or Slovak National Party with 5.62%.
These numbers translate in Smer having 42 seats in parliament followed by PS with 32, Hlas with 27, OĽaNO with 16, KDH with 12, SaS with 11 and SNS with 10. To form a government majority of more than 76 seats is needed.
Repbulika led by euro member of parliament Milan Uhrik gained 4.75 followed by the Hungarian ethnic party Alliance led by Kristian Forro who gained 4.38%. Demokrati or Demorcrats led by former premier Eduar Heger gained 2.93%. Sme rodina led by the head of parliament Boris Kollar obtained only 2.12% and did not make it into parliament.
According to tradition, Robert Fico from Smer will be given by the president the right to form the next government.
On Monday, 2 October, and Tuesday, 3 October, RSI will feature special programmes dedicated to the situation in Slovakia after the results of the snap election.
