Bears injure people, one death

A total of five people, from age 10 to 72, were hurt by a bear running through the streets of Liptovský Mikuláš, northern Slovakia, on Sunday. The victims suffered cuts and bites. All of them were released from hospital after being treated. The city declared a state of emergency but the bear has not been found yet, said Mayor Ján Blcháč on Monday morning.

A total of 14 men from the State Nature Conservancy, the Tatra National Park and the Low Tatras National Park are searching for the bear in the surrounding forest with drones and foot patrols, he said. Hunters, city and state police cooperate with the intervention team.

Meanwhile, the town will be patrolled by six teams.

On Friday, in a separate incident, a 31-year-old tourist from Belarus died when she was scared by a bear. She was walking with a male companion. They ran in different directions. She apparently fell from a height and suffered a fatal head injury, said Žilina region police spokeswoman Zuzana Šefčíková. The accident happened in the Demänovská Valley, a different part of the Žilina region.
