PM Fico claims RTVS activities illegal, public broadcaster opposes

According to Prime Minister Robert Fico, the parliament could deal with the draft law on Slovak television and radio as early as April. According to him, the control mechanisms in RTVS need to be tightened and its character changed from the point of view of legal form.

„There are still a few sensitive topics that the government coalition must resolve vigorously and quickly, especially the literally illegal political activity of RTVS," stated Fico on Sunday.

General Director Ľuboš Machaj and the management of RTVS stated that RTVS is strictly against this claim. In response, Machaj assures the public that the institution fulfils and will fulfil all the tasks that follow from the legislation and from the essence of its public mission. The general director and management of RTVS turn to the representatives of the government coalition, so that instead of creating a negative opinion about public media, which also affects RTVS employees, they finally start a constructive dialogue about the functioning of public media in today's society.

The general director also thinks that Fico´s claims are preparation for the process of abbreviated legislative proceedings in connection with the new law on public media, the obvious purpose of which is the takeover of power of the independent and public broadcaster RTVS. It initiated political and civil protests, as well as a debate on RTVS on the floor of the European Parliament.
