Prime Minister Robert Fico spoke to the Slovak citizens for the first time since the assassination attempt in Handlova on May 15. On Wednesday, June 5, he posted a 14 minute video on his social media, where he addressed several topics, all in connection with the incident. Fico started by praising the medical team of doctors in Banská Bystrica, central Slovakia, and announced his possible return to the office at the end of June. The Prime Minister began his politically charged speech by forgiving the attacker and added that he has no plans to pursue any legal action against the 71 year old perpetrator.
Robert Fico continued saying that the shooter was not a lone wolf or a madman, as the media portray him and blames opposition, media and non-governmental organizations for his attempted assassination.
“It is evident that he was only the messenger of evil, which the politically unsuccessful and frustrated opposition developed in Slovakia to unmanageable proportions. I expect the anti-government media, foreign-funded political non-governmental organizations, and the opposition to begin downplaying my assassination attempt, that it was only an attack by a deranged person, that there were no connections between him and the opposition, that the damage to my health was not serious," said the prime minister.
Among other topics, Fico also mentioned how the events and former government from 2020 to 2023 contributed to the state of today’s society in the Slovak Republic.
