Slovakia will continue to ban the import of some agricultural commodities from Ukraine in order to protect the Slovak market. Prime Minister Robert Fico stated this on harvest day in Slovenská Nová Ves. He said that he spoke with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhaľ on the subject of agricultural commodity imports.
„The only thing we are ready to do for Ukraine is to create a corridor through Slovakia that will ensure the export of Ukrainian agricultural products. However, when it comes to exporting them for the Slovak market, we reject this as a matter of principle, because we have to protect Slovak farmers,“ says PM Fico.
According to Agriculture Minister Richard Takáč, Slovak farmers will have to think and subsequently change and diversify their agricultural production. "This diversification will consist of a stronger orientation towards special crops and special animal production. Farmers will have to grow more fruits and vegetables and increase livestock numbers," explained Takač.
