Government approves proposal to change criminal code

At Wednesday's meeting, the government approved a proposal to change the Criminal Code, which takes into account the results of consultations with the European Commission (EC). Among other things, it concerns sentencing for certain crimes. For the criminal offenses of obstructing the performance of tax administration, indirect corruption, and receiving and providing an undue advantage, the proposal attempts to harmonize sentencing standards with the requirements of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.

"Given the amendments to the Criminal Code relating to the protection of the financial interests of the European Union, it is proposed to introduce an explicit legal regulation of the conceptual definition of the financial interests of the European Union into the Criminal Code," explained the Department of Justice in an explanatory report of the legislative proposal. "For this purpose, sentencing standards are appropriately adjusted," the explanatory report states.
