Slovakia to contribute EUR 105 million to Ukraine, says Slovak President at the NATO summit in Washington

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini is attending the NATO summit in Washington, together with the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs. Speaking at the NATO Council meeting on Ukraine, President Pellegrini confirmed that Slovakia would continue to provide its fair share of financial and practical assistance and confirmed that Slovakia would contribute almost 105 million EURO to the NATO package for Ukraine worth 40 billion dollars.

However, the condition for this contribution is that it will be considered as a defence expense and that its sum will be considered as part of the expenses amounting to 2 percent of the GDP required by NATO from its member states.

According to the President, Slovakia will insist that the issue of the membership of Ukraine in NATO can only be discussed after the war in Ukraine ends. Slovak PM Robert Fico sees the membership of Ukraine in NATO as a guarantee of a third world war.

During the NATO Summit in Washington, Slovak President held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. At the meeting, they discussed the current situation in Ukraine, as well as the possibility of new commercial contracts for the Slovak military industry. The Slovak President also agreed with Volodymyr Zelensky on an official visit to Ukraine.

As part of the NATO summit, foreign ministers of Poland and Slovakia held talks as well, the topics of the bilateral meeting included defence, migration and post war reconstruction of Ukraine. Slovakia thanked Poland for the protection of Slovak airspace. Poland protects it jointly with Czech Republic and Hungary.
