On Thursday, the European Commission (EC) announced that it had formally notified Slovakia for not fully transposing the EU Emissions Trading Directive (EU ETS) into national law. This action is part of broader proceedings against 26 member states that failed to meet the 30 June deadline for incorporating provisions of the revised Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS2) into their laws. The concerned countries now have two months to provide explanations or correct the transposition issues. If a member state fails to comply, the EC can issue a reasoned opinion, a formal request to adhere to EU law, and may eventually refer the case to the Court of Justice of the EU. The new ETS2, introduced in 2023, is designed to cover carbon dioxide emissions from buildings, road transport, and other sectors. It is part of the EU's goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and is set to start operating in 2027.
