Extraordinary parliamentary sessions on ministerial dismissals

Extraordinary parliamentary sessions on ministerial dismissals

Parliament was unable to proceed with the extraordinary session on Tuesday, August 20th regarding the dismissal of Justice Minister Boris Susko and Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová. Despite two attempts, parliament did not reach quorum.

During the first attempt to discuss Susko's dismissal, only 60 members were present, far below the required number and the session was postponed 30 minutes. The situation repeated during the second attempt to address the dismissal of Minister Šimkovičová, with the same amount of MPs present. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Peter Žiga postponed the discussion until Wednesday, August 21, at 11:30 am.

Opposition parties, including PS, SaS, and KDH, initiated the motions for dismissal, criticizing Susko for appealing the conviction of former special prosecutor Dušan Kováčik and temporarily suspending his prison sentence until the Supreme Court's decision. They also targeted Šimkovičová for personnel changes within the Slovak National Theatre and Slovak National Gallery, accusing her of lacking the necessary qualifications for her role.

Both ministers maintain that their actions are within legal bounds and justified within their departments. Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed his support for both ministers and addressed the opposition’s efforts to dismiss the ministers as unfounded.
