Slovakia supports the accession of Moldova to the European Union (EU), Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD), who received his counterpart Dorin Recepan, stated at a press conference in Bratislava on Tuesday.
"The priority topic, to which we quite understandably devoted the most space and attention, is the issue of Moldova's ambition to become an EU member state," said the Slovak Premier.
Fico stated that there are no open political issues between Slovakia and Moldova. "Therefore, we can focus on better economic cooperation as well as cooperation on fundamental political issues. The turnover between Slovakia and Moldova is quite interesting; it is around €120-130 million. Nevertheless, we jointly believe that there is room for increasing this turnover and for more communication and cooperation between the business sector, both from Slovakia and the Republic of Moldova," said Fico.
"Moldova wants to become an EU member state, and we'll have an important referendum on this issue on October 20. Slovakia's support is important for us. We therefore thank you for the very clear support from Slovakia on our path to the EU," added Recean, who arrived with his delegation on an official visit to Slovakia.
