President invites UN Secretary-General to Slovakia

President Peter Pellegrini invited UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to visit Slovakia. According to Pellegrini, the visit could take place during an international forum on artificial intelligence that will be organised by the Education Ministry in cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Slovakia in the autumn next year.

"I noted that Slovakia is a serious candidate for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2028 and 2029," Pellegrini said after meeting Guterres, adding that he assured him that Slovakia is a strong advocate of the functioning of multilateral organisations.

Before the meeting, Pellegrini attended the 2024 Summit of the Future, part of this year's UN General Assembly. He stressed that organizations like the UN Security Council and the World Trade Organization (WTO) are vital for Slovakia to defend its rights in conflicts and trade disputes. He warned that many countries, including major powers, ignore the UN's founding principles, adding, "There is no better alternative to the UN." If the UN weakens further, resolving global conflicts will become impossible.
