Slovak Republic was established 32 years ago

On the 1st of January 1993, the Slovak Republic was officially established, following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia – a process often referred to as the Velvet Divorce. This separation marked the end of a common state and the creation of two independent countries: the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. Notably, the split was characterized by civility, with negotiations over assets, international recognition, and even symbolic matters like national flag designs. The two nations quickly established diplomatic relations and embarked on paths toward integration into European and global institutions. Joining the European Union in 2004 and adopting the euro in 2009, Slovakia has emerged as a dynamic, forward-looking country while maintaining strong ties with its Czech neighbour. The Velvet Divorce remains a testament to the power of negotiation and mutual respect in navigating complex transitions—a model of peaceful nation-building in a world often marked by conflict.

As we celebrate 32 years of Slovak independence, we begin today’s program with a speech from the newly elected president, Peter Pellegrini.
