Two people have been reported dead after a knife attack at a secondary grammar school in Spisska Stara Ves, eastern Slovakia.
The victims of the attack are two women, aged 18 and 51. The injured was an 18-year-old woman who was taken to hospital in Poprad with moderately severe injuries. A 51-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were also treated at the scene for acute stress reaction.
The police have now arrested an 18-year-old student suspected of committing a serious crime at the grammar school in Spisska Stara Ves. The police further reported that all rescue forces are at the scene and are working intensively on the case.
It's a real tragedy what happened, President Peter Pellegrini said in a statement. Whatever the motive of the attacker, it left two dead and another injured in a critical condition, added the head of state.
I'm gathering all the relevant data on the tragic event, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) posted on a social network, adding that in his opinion, it's difficult to understand what happened at the secondary grammar school.
Education Minister Tomas Drucker (Hlas-SD) will do everything in his power to determine the causes of the knife attack, take appropriate actions, and implement measures to protect children and teachers in the future, he announced on social media. Drucker called for approaching the tragedy with the utmost sensitivity and urging avoidance of speculation or hasty conclusions. He expressed his sincere and deepest condolences to the victims' families.
The tragedy that took place on Thursday at a grammar school in the town of Spisska Stara Ves affects everyone and confirms that cruelty must have no place in society, TASR has learnt from the post of Czech Foreign Affairs Minister Jan Lipavsky on a social network. "I was shaken by the sad news of the tragic attack in neighbouring Slovakia. This brutal act touches us all and confirms that cruelty must have no place in our society. I think of the loved ones and families of the victims, I think of the whole of Slovakia," wrote Lipavsky. In December 2023, the most tragic shooting in the history of the Czech Republic took place at Charles University in Prague, with 13 victims dying at the scene, 1 victim dying in hospital and 24 people injured.
